Discovering Rutland Water

Packed up the caravan and ready to depart Merry Fiddlers in Epping. Quite a nice day today and we are heading around 90 miles North to a hideaway site close to the south of Rutland Water. Set off up the M11/A14/A1 and after around an hour we come to our usual stopping place when we head up and down the A1 - Peterborough Services. Grab a McDonalds, use the toilets and back in the caravan for the last 30 minute drive up the A1 towards Stamford. The large brown 'Rutland Water' sign appears so we turn off towards Empingham, then left towards Normanton and the south of Rutland Water. The Paddock (Caravan and Camping Club) at Lyndon is our next stop. Very quiet, only one other caravan there. Owner tells us to park anywhere so we choose a pitch with good views of the water from the front window. Cost at the time is £12 a night with a charge of £5 a night for electric. A bit expensive, but as we are only staying for 2 nights we decide that we don't need electric as our battery should last us.

Rutland Water from the caravan site.

Unpacked and set up the caravan, dog outside and our collection of plants that we drag around with us.

Got quite a few red chillies now from our 93p reduced half dead Asda chilli plant. Cup of coffee made and a walk around the site to look at the view from the top of the hill. I noticed on the way in that there is a visitors centre at the bottom of the hill just past the caravan site so put the dog on his lead and had a walk down to see what was there. It was all closed up when I arrived but I did notice that they have Ospreys, and there are still 2 in the area so will have a look tomorrow to see what is going on, but there looked to be a very nice footpath along side the water so walked a mile and back to the caravan as the sun was setting.
